St. Peter's Blanks Siena Gridders 35-0

Nov. 3, 2001

Box Score

COLONIE, N.Y. - St. Peter's (8-1/4-1 MAAC) scored 28 third quarter points breaking open a competitive game, and the Siena (1-7/1-5) offense turned the ball over seven times, as the Peacocks coasted to a 35-0 win at Heritage Park Saturday afternoon.

Shawn Poling fell on an errant snap in the endzone on a botched punt attempt by Siena with just over 13 minutes remaining in the first half to break a scoreless tie. The touchdown was the only score of the first half which was dominated by both teams' defenses. St. Peter's, which entered the game with the best defense in the I-AA nation statistically was the major reason for the Peacocks school-record eighth victory.

Despite managing just 66 total yards on 63 offensive plays, Siena was in the game midway through the fourth quarter and driving for the game-tying touchdown when a huge gain by tailback Julian Brown was called back on a holding penalty. The drive faltered and the Peacocks responded by scoring on their next four possessions to put the game away.

Derek Clayton, who rushed 16 times for 82 yards, scored the first of the four TD's on a 23-yard scamper. Doug Barber then reeled in two long passes for scores later in the quarter. After beating the Siena secondary for a 52-yard touchdown reception, Barber broke free on a double-reverse flea-flicker to push the final margin to 35-0.

Steve Graziano had 10 tackles for a Siena defense that overall played fairly well.

The Saints return to action at Marist on November 17.
