COLONIE, N.Y. - Sacred Heart (3-0/2-0 NEC) dominated statistically, but needed a fourth quarter surge to put away Siena (0-3/0-1 MAAC) in a non-conference football game played at Heritage Park Saturday afternoon.
Justin Holtfreter complete 19-of-26 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns leading a Pioneers' offense that put up 436 total yards of offense. Marvin Royal added 71 yards on the ground and scored the ice breaking touchdown with seven and a half minutes remaining in the first half.
Siena's offense sputtered, gaining only 26 total yards on the day. The defense did its part in keeping the game close for the better part of three quarters. The Pioneers had the ball five times in the Siena red zone before scoring their initial touchdown.
Dan Smacchia (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) turned a monster game in defeat for the Siena defense. The 6-0 sophomore linebacker registered 10 tackles (six solo), one quarterback sack and forced a fumble.
Prior to the game, Siena honored local firefighters from various departments around the Capital Region.
The Saints return to home to Heritage Park next Saturday to play LaSalle University. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
