Fairfield, CT: Erin Hutnick and Erin DeMatteo scored in the 60th and 83rd minutes to lift Siena over Fairfield in women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Saints managed just three shots, but made them count in the 2-0 victory. The win is Siena's third in a row and improves the Saints record to 3-4 and 1-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). It is the first time Siena has beaten the Stags since 1996.
Fairfield controlled ball possession from the opening whistle, but just couldn't seem to convert a score. Freshman Meghan King rang the crossbar early in the first half, and senior JulieAnne Forman had two quality scoring chances but neither found the back of the net.
After a scoreless first half, Siena's Erin Hutnick put the Saints ahead 1-0 when she collected a cross from Erin Beam then lofted a ball over Fairfield's Dana Comuniello that just found the inside of the far post. At 82:30 Siena went ahead 2-0 as Erin MeMatteo found the back of the net off a Comuniello rebound from a direct kick.
Siena's Noel Cox collected the shutout with five saves, her third consecutive shutout. Fairfield out shot the Saints 13-3, and had nine corner kicks to Siena's two. Comuniello played all 90 minutes in goal for Fairfield, making one save and allowing two goals.
Siena closes the weekend road trip at Iona tomorrow afternoon.
