Saints Fall To Hartwick, 35-17

Sept 8, 2001

Stats

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Siena football team (1-0) more than held its own for over a half Saturday night before succumbing to the high powered offensive attack of the Hartwick Hawks (2-0) in a non-conference game played in front of a capacity 1, 524 fans at Hartwick's All-Purpose Field.

Ryan Johnson pulled in three touchdown receptions for the second consecutive week, as Hartwick turned a 7-3 halftime lead into a 35-17 rout.

The Saints two touchdowns came late in the fourth quarter with the game already out of reach. John Carter pushed his way in from a yard out with just over five minutes remaining and Chris Karolus found a wide-open Charles Reese in the back of the endzone with 18 seconds left to create the final margin.

Hartwick's Daniel Pincelli completed 17 of 30 passes for 272 yards and four touchdowns. Clearance Welch carried the ball 16 times for 152 yards and one score.

Karolus completed 14 of 38 passes for 179 yards and the touchdown. Sophomore Robert Prince had six receptions for 93 yards and classmate Julian Brown ran the ball 11 times for 62 yards in a losing effort.

Sophomore Dan Smacchia played a solid game on defense for the Saints. Smacchia had eight and a half tackles (two for loss) and one quarterback sack.

Siena returns to action next Saturday at Stony Brook. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
