Women's Soccer Shot Down by Army

Sept. 8, 2001

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Siena's offense struggled again as the Saints failed to score, losing their third straight game, 2-0 to Army on Friday night. Senior co-captain Laura Schroeder scored with nine minutes left in the first half and junior Kelly Schachtler tallied a man-down goal in the final three minutes in leading Army to victory at Clinton Field.

The victory boosted Army's unbeaten streak to three straight as the Black Knights improved to 2-1-1 after registering their second shutout of the season while Siena fell to 0-3.

Army dominated the game from start to finish and played the final six minutes a man down. The Black Knights held a commanding 33-4 advantage in shots and 14 were on goal. Army also led 6-0 in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Sara Johnson was not called upon to make a save in recording the decision.

Schroeder, tallying her second goal of the season, blasted a close shot into the right corner of the net off a feed from Emily Cook in the 35th minute. The Black Knights peppered the Saints net with 16 shots in the first half, seven of those on goal.

In the final 25 minutes of the contest, a large contingent of the Corps of Cadets returning from a football rally stood behind Siena's net and cheered on the booters. Their presence made a difference when Army received a red card and had to play a man down over the final 6:45. Schachtler scored unassisted the insurance marker with 3:46 left when she booted a shot from the six-yard line across the goalmouth that went into the opposite backside of the net. The goal was her first of the season.

In goal for the Saints, Noel Cox made six saves in the first half before giving way to Krista Nordmark who turned aside the same number of shots over the final 45 minutes.

The Saints open the conference schedule at home Sunday against Manhattan. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
