LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Sophomore running back Rod Williams (Highlands, NY) and senior quarterback Scott Bard (Plantsville, Conn.) each scored second-half rushing touchdowns to help Stony Brook defeat Siena College 14-0, in a non-conference game at Heritage Park Saturday afternoon.
The victory came in miserable field conditions, as steady rain poured onto the field for the first half of play. The poor weather aided each team's defense, as both teams entered intermission deadlocked in a scoreless tie.
Stony Brook (5-2, 3-2 NEC) took the lead for good with 6:13 remaining in the third quarter, when the Seawolves' offense cranked out an 11 play, 92-yard drive that was capped by Williams' 1-yard scoring run to take a 7-0 lead. The key completion on the drive came one play earlier when Bard hooked up with Williams for a 49-yard pass completion on a 3rd and 10 play at midfield.
The Seawolves completed the game's scoring early in the fourth quarter when Bard hit paydirt from four yards out to give Stony Brook a 14-0 lead.
Both teams played outstanding defense in the contest, as Siena (2-5, 2-4 MAAC) held Stony Brook to 122 total passing yards, 43 less than its average passing output per game. The Saints offense was shut down by Stony Brook, as Siena managed only 69 passing yards and 224 total yards of offense on the day.
"Our defense kept us within striking distance all game long," Siena head coach Jay Bateman said. "Our offense struggled today especially with the poor weather conditions and never really got on track throughout the game."
Siena was led on defense by All-American junior linebacker Dan Smacchia (Thornwood, NY) who recorded a sack and made 16 tackles. Senior linebacker Aden Smith (Rockville Centre, NY) made 17 tackles to lead the Stony Brook defense.
Siena returns to Heritage Park to complete a three-game homestand when the Saints play host to St. John's at 1 p.m. Saturday.
