Quarterback Dan Ammel completed seven of 16 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns, and running back Jason Bonadies rushed for two touchdowns as Sacred Heart University defeated Siena College, 41-14, before 734 fans at Christian Brothers Academy.
Siena (0-6) took only 20 seconds to draw first blood, as freshman quarterback Alex Conlon threw a 78-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Joe Piascik on the first play from scrimmage for a 7-0 lead.
Sacred Heart (5-1) also was successful on its first drive, moving the ball 44 yards on 12 plays before kicker Greg Tonzola hit a 23-yard field goal to cut the Siena lead to 7-3. The Pioneers would take advantage of Siena losing senior standout linebacker and MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Dan Smacchia in the opening quarter, as Sacred Heart took the lead against the Saints defense two drives later, when Ammel completed a 71-yard scoring strike to wide receiver Marlon Ward for a 10-7 advantage.
After Tonzola ended the Pioneers next drive with a 29-yard field goal for a 13-7 lead, Bonadies hit the end zone for the first time on a 13-yard scoring run that gave the visitors a 21-7 lead and a lead it would not relinquish.
Siena would score its final touchdown in the third quarter, as wing back John Logan ended a 10-play, 64-yard drive with a 9-yard scoring run to make the score 34-14. Turnovers plagued Siena, as the Saints had eight fumbles, four of which were lost, and threw two interceptions in the defeat. The turnovers plagued Siena's offense, which gained a season-high 396 yards.
Logan led the Siena rushing attack with 75 yards on 10 carries, while Conlon completed two of 14 passes for 100 yards and had two interceptions. Piascik led the Siena receiving corps with one catch for 78 yards and a touchdown.
Siena will continue its season-long five-game homestand when it plays host to Wagner Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
