Saint Anselm Keeps Siena Winless, 23-8

Nov. 1, 2003

Box Score

Derek Dimartino rushed for a season-high 154 yards on 28 carries, including two scoring runs in the first half, as Saint Anselm College defeated Siena College, 23-8, at Christian Brothers Academy.

The victory snapped a seven-game losing streak for Saint Anselm (1-7), who handed the Saints (0-9) their 11th straight defeat.

Saint Anselm began the scoring on a one-yard scoring run by Dimartino on the final play of the first quarter. The scoring run capped a 12 play, 47-yard drive that began when Saint Anselm received a Siena punt at the Saints' 47-yard line with 5:05 to play in the quarter.

Saint Anselm increased the lead to 14-0 on its next possession, as Hawk linebacker James Ward recovered a fumble by Siena quarterback Christian Karolus (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) on the Saint Anselm 45-yard line. After a 27-yard rush by Pat Turner, Dimartino ended the drive on the next play, running 28-yards down the sideline for the touchdown.

Hawk kicker Michael Garcarz put any Saint comeback hopes aside, as he kicked three field goals, including a career-long 47-yard kick in the third quarter that gave Saint Anselm a 20-0 lead with 13:03 to play in the third quarter.

Saint backup quarterback Alex Conlon (Northport, N.Y./St. Anthony's) needed only two plays to get Siena on the scoreboard. The freshman completed a 35-yard pass to Charles Reese (Bedford, N.H./Wileraham-Monson) and then handed the ball to sophomore tailback Sal Jeraci (West Harrison, N.Y./Harrison), who ran 10 yards for his fourth touchdown of the year with 4:44 to play.

Jeraci led the Saints with 54 rushing yards on 13 carries in the defeat.

Siena will complete its current five-game homestand when the Saints play host to LaSalle in their final home game of the year at 1 p.m. Nov. 8.
