The Siena College women's soccer team beat conference opponent Rider University 2-1 at Siena Soccer Field Friday afternoon. The win moves the Saints to 4-6-1 on the season, and 1-0 in the MAAC, while Rider drop to 5-3-1 and 0-1 in league play.
Co-captain Erin DeMatteo showed no fear against Rider as she opened fire against Broncs goalie Kim Carter putting the Saints on the board at the 14-minute mark in the first half. DeMatteo cradled a side pass that came off a double assist from sophomores Kristen Turner and Erin Morine. The goal was the first for DeMatteo on the season.
Four minutes later, sophomore Lauren Stys drilled a shot off a corner entry pass from DeMatteo, nailing the ball in the Broncs net. Rider showed no sign of backing off, as sophomore midfielder Kelli Burke responded with a much-needed insurance goal at 41:02 from the right side off a pass from senior Tami Coyle. The score prohibited the Saints from keeping their 2-0 advantage.
With the opportunity to tie, defender Brandie Petrie made a sweet slide tackle to cut off the Broncs defense crushing Rider's momentum from the bench.
Amy Loughridge added one shot on goal for the Saints.
Rider played a tough game committing a season-high 13 fouls. The Broncs out-shot the Saints, 12-8 (9 -1 in the 2nd half) and 7-2 advantage in corners. Saints goalie Noel Cox nabbed four saves while protecting the Siena net. Carter claimed five for the Broncs.
"This was a great win for us. We came out aggressive and we stayed that way", said Head Coach Steve Karbowski.
Siena will return to action Sunday to take on conference foe Loyola at 1 p.m.
