LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Siena women's soccer team (10-7-0, 5-2-0) won their second overtime game of the season 2-1 at Iona (9-8-1, 5-4-0) this afternoon.
It didn't take long for the Saints to stake claim to the lead in New Rochelle, N.Y. Less than four minutes into the game, sophomore Katie Goodwin (Valley Stream, N.Y.) found junior Kristen Turner (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) who fired a sweeping shot that found a home at the top right corner of the net to give Siena a 1-0 lead. Goodwin's assist brings her total to two.
With just over two minutes showing on the clock in regulation, junior goalie Carey Winkler found herself in a sprint to a served in ball by Iona. The Gaels Stephanie Sommers beat her to the ball and sent the game to overtime with a shot from 25 yards out. The Sand Lake, N.Y., native recorded seven saves in the game bringing her season total to 25. Winkler had not allowed a goal in 200 minutes between the pipes spanning back to October 7 before today's tying goal was surrendered.
With just under two minutes left in the first overtime period, Turner found the ball in a scramble inside the box and blasted home her second goal of the game. The junior now has eight goals on the season to go with her four assists. Junior Lauren Stys (Hooksett, N.Y.) picked up the assist on the play, her first of the season.
In overtime games this season, the Green and Gold are 2-1 and have won their last two.
The Saints conclude the regular season on Sunday, October 23, as they travel to Connecticut to take on conference foes Fairfield. This year's women's soccer MAAC Championships will be held at the Wide World of Disney and aired on ESPNU next weekend.
