Sophomore Nadiege Honore had 34 kills to help Siena rally for a 3-2 victory over visiting Marist in the MAAC opener for both schools Wednesday in a Time Warner televised volleyball match on the Siena campus. Marist led the match 2-1, but the Saints fought back to take the final two games 31-29 and 15-9.
Honore's 34 kills were the most by any Siena (11-8/1-0) player since rally scoring began in 2001. Christie Gustafson added 19 kills for the Saints. Marist (5-11/0-1) was led by Sally Hansen who posted a .515 attack percentage with 18 kills. Teammates Jaime Kenworthy and Christy Luke had 14 and 13 kills a piece.
Siena controlled the tempo for most of the first game, and held off a late Marist charge for a 30-25 triumph. The Red Foxes rallied for a convincing 30-23 win in game two. The third and fourth games were exciting throughout. Siena rallied from a 29-24 deficit in the third game to tie the score, but Marist won the ensuing two points to take the game 31-29. Siena jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the fourth game, but also survived a furious rally by the Red Foxes for a 31-29 win.
In the decisive fifth game, Siena raced to an early lead, and after Marist closed the gap to 11-9, won the final four points of the match.
Freshman setter April London had 60 assists and classmate Kathi Kobayashi led Siena with 20 digs. Honore added 17 digs and Gustafson had 15.
Marist had four players post double figure digs, led by libero Katie Lux' 13.
The Saints are off until next Tuesday, when they resume non conference play at Seton Hall.
