Lewiston, NY - The Saints won the 2005 MAAC Volleyball Championship today, defeating Fairfield University 3-2 to claim their first MAAC title since 1996 and earned the league's automatic berth into the 2005 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship.
Christie Gustafson was named tournament most valuable player after posting a double-double of 16 kills and 13 digs in the match. MAAC Rookie of the Year April London and Liz Hubbard were selected to the All-Tournament Team.
The Saints, now winners of nine straight matches, also got a double-double from Nadiege Honore, registering 18 kills and 13 digs. London led the Saints with 40 assists while Kathi Kobayashi finished the match with a team-high 20 digs. Heading into the NCAA Championship, the Saints have an overall record of 20-11.
The pairings for the 2005 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship will be announced on Sunday, November 27 from 2:30-3:00 pm on ESPNews.
Fairfield had five players with double-digit kills, led by Lindsay Lee who finished the match with 13. Alex Fox added 12 kills, while Kelly Oliver and Jazmin Pa'akaula each added 11. The Stags also had four players to register double-digit digs with Pa'akaula and Lee each finishing with 16. Lauren Laramore and Brandi Higa added 14 digs.
The Stags have an overall record of 18-13 and will conclude their season next week against Western Michigan and Valparaiso.
