Final Stats
Christie Gustafson, Liz Hubbard and Nadiege Honore each posted double digit kills as Siena knocked off regional power Syracuse 3-2 at Manley Field House Wednesday night. With their third straight win the surging Saints improved to 9-6 on the season while SU fell to 10-5.
Siena won six of the final 10 points in the deciding fifth game to pull away for a 15-12 win. Christa Glenn killed the final point of the match to finish off the upset.
The Saints won the first game 33-31 posting a .263 attack percentage compared to a .053 showing for the Orange. Syracuse bounced back for a 30-14 win in game two, but the Saints answered with a 30-28 triumph in the third game. The Orange forced the fifth game with an easy 30-11 win in game four.
Setter April London played a key role in the seesaw battle as she has all year for the Saints. The freshman handed out 54 assists in 132 set attempts (.409). Gustafson registered a double-double collecting 11 of Siena's 54 digs. Freshman Kathi Kobayashi had a team-high 18 digs.
Syracuse held a statistical advantage, racking up a .307 attack percentage with 67 kills. Kelly Duan led the Orange with 17 kills. The Saints, picked ninth in the preseason MAAC poll, equaled their win total from 2004 with their ninth win of the season Wednesday.
The reward is their first home game in 23 days Friday evening at the Alumni Recreation Center against Central Connecticut.
