Senior Christie Gustafson had a match-high 22 kills in her final match at the Alumni Recreation Center as Siena made short work of Iona, 3-0 (30-13, 30-28, 30-16) on Sunday in Loudonville. The Saints have won seven of their last eight games and enter the MAAC Championships later this week as the #2 seed.
Siena exploded out of the gate, riding the momentum of Gustafson's Senior Day ceremony to a 9-1 lead in game one. The Saints continued to pour it on, and won the first game easily 30-13. In the second game, the Saints rallied from a 21-12 deficit to pull of a dramatic 30-28 win and take control of the match. The Saints again had their way in a 30-16 win in game three.
Gustafson posted her second double-double of the week, adding 10 digs. She is now just three digs shy of becoming just the third player in school history to finish her career with 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. Gustafson was joined on the stat sheet by junior Nadiege Honore, who continued her late season renaissance with 14 kills in just 26 attacks.
Freshman Burgandy McCurty, a leading contender for MAAC Rookie of the Year honors, had 11 kills and a .556 attack percentage. Libero Kathi Kobayashi averaged better than seven digs per game, collecting a match-high 23 for the Saints.
Megan Dailey and Kristin Allain each had seven kills for the Gaels. Siena posted a .407 team attack percentage, its third highest output of the season. The win avenged a surprising loss at Iona earlier this year.
Siena finishes the regular-season with a 19-12 overall record and a 15-3 league mark. Iona falls to 7-20 and 5-13 in MAAC play. The Saints will be the #2 seed in this week's MAAC Championships, contested at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. Siena's first game will be Thursday evening at 7 p.m.
