LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Women's soccer topped New Jersey Institute of Technology 6-0 at the Governors Cup Invitational this afternoon at UAlbany. The Saints outshot NJIT 29-0 in the non-conference match and improved to 3-3-1 on the season. Carey Winkler (Sand Lake, N.Y./Averill Park) held the Highlanders scoreless and earned her first win in goal for the Saints this season.
Siena got on the board early when forward Kristen Turner (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay) placed a shot over goaltender Bruna Lotufo that found the back of the net at 28:03. Just over three minutes later junior Kara Sefcik (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) gathered a rebound on the left side and fired it past Lotufo to go up 2-0.
The Saints kept attacking as they moved toward the half. In the 37th minute midfielder Erinn Flaherty (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) fired a shot past goaltender Bruna Lotufo posting her second goal on the season.
Siena came out firing in the second half. Less than seven minutes into the period junior Tara Ross (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) collected a rebound and placed it in the back of the net. Following Ross's lead, forward Susie Blaisdell (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) posted her second goal of the season at 58:15 off a rebound to put the Saints up 5-0. Siena's first five goals came unassisted.
The Saints sealed the victory in the 90th minute when freshman Alyssa Thayer (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester West) scored from outside the box off a feed from midfielder Amy Loughridge (Guilderland, N.Y.).
Winkler earned the win in 90 minutes of action and improves to 1-1-1 on the year. Lotufo and Angelica Sepulveda combined for 10 saves in net for the Highlanders.
Siena travels to Navy on September 24th and welcomes Fairfield to Loudonville on September 29th.
