Burgandy McCurty killed 14 of her 22 attacks to lead Siena past Rider 3-1 (30-19, 30-32, 30-20 and 30-28) in Loudonville Friday night. It was the 15th straight win for the Saints. The team returns to action in the ARC Saturday against Loyola at 2 p.m.
Rider gave Siena all it could handle despite entering the match with a 1-18 mark and an 0-10 league record. The Broncs took the second game 32-30 after Siena coasted to a 30-19 win in game one. The victory prompted head coach Garvey Pierre to shake up his rotation, inserting sophomore Kau'i Robello into the setter role.
Robello and the Saints responded with a 30-20 win the third game, and Siena's starters returned to hold off the Broncs 30-28 in game four.
Senior Nadiege Honore had 14 kills, but also committed 12 errors for the Saints. Kelly Hummel contributed 11 kills in 18 attacks in the middle and Elizabeth Akin added eight kills in 18 attacks in an extended role on the outside.
Senior Janine Pesusich returned to the rotation for the first time this season and had a kill in a limited role. Pesusich had been injured all season, but it is hoped her return will add further depth to the Saints formidable middle.
Rider used a balanced attack to combat Siena's usually reliable defense. Six Broncs had six kills her more. Still Siena held a comfortable 14-9 advantage in blocks and a 63-38 edge in digs.
Libero Kathi Kobayashi led all players with 16 digs.
It is the 15th straight win for Siena which hasn't lost since August 31. The Saints figure to be tested the next two days as they host third place Loyola Saturday and rival UAlbany Sunday at 4 p.m.
