UAlbany Rallies to Snap Saints Streak

Oct. 21, 2007

Final Stats

UAlbany fought off two match points in the third game and rallied for a 3-2 (27-30, 23-30, 31-29, 31-29 and 15-8) win over cross-town rival Siena Sunday in Loudonville. The victory snapped the Saints 16-match winning streak - the second longest in the nation.

Siena (17-4) freshman Aubrey Bobo posted a match-high 25 kills and added 18 digs, but it wasn't enough to offset UAlbany's balanced attack.

The Saints won a competitive first game 30-27 and then broke away for a 30-23 win in game two. Siena took a 29-27 lead in the third game following a Bobo kill, and the crowd of better than 500 rose to its feet anticipating match point. UAlbany got consecutive kills from Ashley Crenshaw to tie the game and completed the rally when Siena setter April London was whistled for a ball handling error.

The Great Danes (15-7) led game four 28-22 before Siena stormed back to tie the score behind six straight points off the service of London. Siena's junior setter had a match-high 62 assists and added three aces. After a Siena attack error gave UAlbany a 30-29 lead, Kamisha Kellam knotted the match at two games a piece with a kill.

UAlbany controlled the fifth game, jumping to an early 7-2 lead and holding on for a 15-8 win. It was the Great Danes sixth straight win over the Saints.

The Great Danes won the match at the net, where they owned a 19-13 advantage in blocks and limited Siena's talented middle hitter Burgandy McCurty and outside hitter Nadiege Honore to .192 and .176 hitting percentages respectively. Siena posted 73 kills compared to 63 for the Danes and also held a 58-50 edge in digs.

Crenshaw led UAlbany with 19 kills. Kellam had 15 and Teresa Coppiellie and Valerie Sourbeer each had 13.

Bobo was the clear star for Siena, posting a .395 attack percentage to go along with her 25 kills, 18 digs and match-high four service aces. Libero Kathi Kobayashi also had 18 digs for the Saints.

The Saints will look to start a new streak Tuesday night at America East foe Binghamton.
