Oct. 6, 2007

Final Stats

Loudonville, N.Y. - The Siena women's soccer team dropped its conference opener falling 3-0 to Marist (4-3-1, 1-0-0) this afternoon in Loudonville. Red Foxes freshman forward Merrilynn Esteve posted what proved to be the game winning goal in the 10th minute to lead Marist past Siena (3-6-1, 0-1-0). The Saints welcomed back Siena's all-time leading goal scorer Kristen Turner '07 honoring her in a ceremony prior to today's contest.

Just 9:16 into the first half, Esteve notched Marist's first score of the contest when she accepted a feed from Maria Baez and slipped a shot into the right corner. The Red Foxes took this 1-0 advantage into the half.

The Saints came out of intermission energized and nearly evened the score when junior midfielder Chelsea Maguire tracked down a lead pass in the right corner, sent a service in the middle of the box to Susie Blaisdell who's header was just saved by leaping Marist goalkeeper Caitlin Nazarechuk.

Nazarechuk accumulated three saves and earned her third win of the season in goal. Saints goalkeeper Patti Carroll tallied a game-high 11 saves on the afternoon.

With 60:24 on the clock, Marist added a goal to its lead when Teresa Ferraro tapped a loose ball in front of the goal to Katie Zasly who found the back of the net. Red Foxes sophomore Ali Lauterborn managed the final goal of the contest in the 82nd minute when she finished on a lead pass from Zasly.

Marist bombarded the Saints with 22 shot attempts to Siena's nine.

Prior to today's contest, the Siena Athletic Department honored Turner for her incredible accomplishments throughout her four years with the women's soccer program. Turner finished her career with a Siena soccer record 35 career goals and 87 total points. At the conclusion of her senior season, Turner was named the 2006 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year and earned All-Northeast Region Third Team honors.

With the loss, the Saints drop to 3-6-1 overall and 0-1-0 in league play. Siena begins a two game road series on Friday at Fairfield. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
