The Siena volleyball team left little doubt it is ready for next week's MAAC championships. The Saints thumped Marist 3-0 (30-18, 30-13 and 30-10) on an emotional Senior Day in Loudonville. With the win, the Saints secured a share of their first league regular-season MAAC title since 1995 and earned the top seed in the Tournament.
Siena (22-7) finishes the regular-season tied with Fairfield. The Saints won the tiebreaker with the Stags because they won more games in the head-to-head season series. Siena swept Fairfield 3-0 in Loudonville in September and lost 3-2 at Fairfield last month. Loyola is the #3 seed in the Tournament, Iona is the #4.
The Saints were dominant in every phase Sunday, committing just four attack errors on the day in posting a .556 hitting percentage. In the second game alone, Siena killed 17 of its 20 attacks without an error (.850).
Burgandy McCurty had 13 kills in 18 attacks without an error in the middle. Freshman phenom Aubrey Bobo had 10 kills in 18 attacks with one error and senior Nadiege Honore had 10 kills and just two errors in 18 attacks. Senior Janine Pesusich had six kills in 11 attacks without an error, starting all three games for the Saints.
Setter April London collected 41 assists on Siena's 49 kills. She added a season-high seven service aces and killed all four of her attacks.
The Siena defense was solid as well. Junior Libero Kathi Kobayashi had eight digs. Senior Jessica Hackett had seven and added two kills in two attacks. London compiled six digs.
Alexandra Schultze had 12 of Marist's 25 kills.
It was a special day on UHY Court at the Alumni Recreation Center. In addition to a Pregame Senior Day ceremony that honored Liz Akin, Hackett, Pesusich and Honore, the Saints honored the Capital District Express - the team which recently captured the Bronze Medal in the 2007 Special Olympics World Games in Shanghai.
Siena will play Iona next Sunday in the MAAC Championships. Fairfield and Loyola will meet in the other semifinal. Game times are yet to be announced. The Saints swept the season series with Iona, winning both matches in straight games. Just yesterday, Siena defeated Iona 3-0 (30-17, 30-26 and 30-19). The winners will meet in Monday's MAAC Championship match which will be televised by ESPNU at 7:30 p.m.
