Buffalo, N.Y. - Junior forward Laura Menty banked in a lay-up as time expired to send Siena (6-16, 5-7) past Canisius (12-11, 4-8) 59-58 this afternoon in Buffalo, N.Y. Menty recorded her second double-double of the season carrying the Saints with 25 points and 10 rebounds. The win gives the Saints their first road victory of the season. This snaps a 13 game road losing streak dating back to last season.
"We had a great team effort all around today," said head coach Gina Castelli. "It's been a long time since we won here in Buffalo. To split our two games out here was a good accomplishment."
Siena carried a 31-30 advantage into intermission as the Saints shot a phenomenal 64% from the field. Senior co-captain Katelyn Dooley and Menty combined for 21 of the Saints 31 first half points going 9-for-10 from the field.
Siena controlled the tempo in the second half, but never held more than a four point lead. Canisius refused to back down and tied the game six times before finally took a one point advantage with 19 seconds remaining in the contest. Golden Griffins guard Brittane Russell weaved between the Siena defense and hit a runner to put Canisius ahead 58-57.
With the game clock running down, junior forward Heather Stec sent the ball in to Menty in the low post. Menty missed the first shot attempt with time running out, gathered her own rebound and drained a bank shot just before the final horn to put the Saints on top 59-58.
Dooley was the only other Saint to post double figures contributing 13 points to the winning effort. Sarah Fullmer, a freshman center, chipped in eight points coming off the bench. Shondaya Burrell recorded seven points, five rebounds and four assists.
The Saints maintained control throughout the contest trailing for only 28 seconds over the course of the game. Siena shot an extraordinary 48% from the field going 25-for-52. The Saints outscored Canisius in the post 38-20.
