Junior outside hitter Lauren Engle tallied a match-high 22 kills as Hofstra Volleyball defeated Siena 3-1 (33-31, 30-26, 29-31, 30-24), to improve to 4-0 for the first time since the 1989 campaign. Siena, fell to 1-3 with the loss despite 19 kills from Nadiege Honore and 18 from Burgandy McCurty.
Senior middle blocker Amanda Beyersdorff collected 15 kills and five blocks for the Pride, which improved its all-time record against New York state teams to 69-16.
Hofstra pulled out a tight 33-31 victory in the first game despite being out-hit by the Saints .357 - .182. The Pride would go up 2-0 with a 30-26 win in game two using five kills apiece from Engle and Beyersdorff.
In the third game, Siena fought off a match point and scored the final three points of the game to send the match to a fourth game. With sophomore outside hitter Monica Knight serving, Hofstra rallied from a 15-12 deficit in the fourth game to take a 18-15 lead and cruised from there in winning by the score of 30-24.
Sophomore right side Harmonie Calinda added 12 kills and three blocks, while Beyersdorff led the way with five blocks for Hofstra. Junior setter Sarah Lopez and freshman setter Rachel August shared the setting duties in the match and dished out 27 and 21 assists respectively. On the defensive end, senior libero Shellane Ogoshi led the Pride with 17 digs.
Aubrey Bobo was also in double figures for Siena as she chipped in with 13 kills. April London had a match-high 48 assists, while Kathi Kobayashi picked up a match-high 20 digs.
In the opening match of the 2007 Hofstra/Asics Invitational, San Diego State used a balanced attack to sweep Ball State in three games (30-22, 30-21, 30-17). Six different players had at least five kills for the Aztecs, led by Lauren Salisbury and Kelley Wahlin, who each knocked down nine. Ball State got a match-high 10 kills from Elaina Kakatolis and a match-high 31 assists from Angie Parrell.
Siena and San Diego State will meet at 9:30 a.m. before Hofstra faces Ball State in morning session action at the Hofstra/Asics Invitational on Saturday. The afternoon session will feature Ball State versus Siena at 3:30 p.m. and Hofstra hosting San Diego State in the tournament finale.
