Final Stats
The Siena volleyball withstood a stern early challenge from visiting Iona Saturday to post its ninth straight victory and improve to 5-0 in the MAAC with a 3-0 (32-30, 30-25 and 30-15) win at the College of Saint Rose in Albany. Iona dropped its first MAAC match of the season, falling to 4-1 in league play and 6-11 on the season. Siena is now 10-3 overall on the year and has won nine straight matches.
The Saints fought off two game points in the opener, before rallying for a 32-30 win thanks to a late Burgandy McCurty kill. McCurty finished the match with 15 kills and no errors in 22 attacks to post a .682 attack percentage. Setter April London had 45 assists and moved the ball efficiently between McCurty in the middle and senior Nadiege Honore on the outside. Honore ended with a match-high 16 kills and also contributed 11 digs.
The Saints broke free for a 30-25 victory in an evenly contested second game before coasting to a 30-15 win in the decisive third game. Iona hung tough behind its talented freshman class. Colleen Genett had eight kills, libero Allison Nieters had a match-high 18 digs and Laura Fojanesi added six digs. Sophomore Sarah Wienerand and junior Kendall Paulus each had 10 kills.
Siena's defense was solid throughout. The Saints owned a 53-40 advantage in digs. Hawaiians Kathi Kobayashi (12) and Kau'i Robello (11) joined Honore with double figure digs. The Saints also finished with a 6-2 edge in blocks and a 10-6 advantage in service aces.
Siena will look to run its winning streak to 10 Wednesday night at Marist.
