Burgandy McCurty and Amanda Begin combined for 33 kills to pace Siena's 3-1 MAAC volleyball road win Saturday over Iona. The Saints completed a series sweep of the Gaels and moved to 7-2 in conference play at the midpoint of the MAAC season.
Siena (9-10/7-2) won the first set 25-23, lost the second 25-18, won the third 25-18 and took the fourth 25-20.
The Saints led the first set 18-12 before the Gaels used a 9-3 run to knot the score at 21-21. McCurty closed the set with three straight kills to put Siena up 1-0.
The Gales (13-8/5-4) ended the second set with a 6-0 run to even things up, but Siena answered with a decisive win in the third set and carried the momentum into the fourth where they gained an early advantage and never looked back in clinching the match.
McCurty finished with 18 kills and 14 digs, hitting .361 from her middle blocker post. Begin had 15 kills and six digs on the outside, and versatile junior Kau'i Robello had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.
Setter April London also collected a double-double, finishing with 46 assists and 10 digs. London spread the ball around well, involving several Saints' in the offense.
Libero Aimee Gosse had 12 assists and classmate Brianne Bobo collected 13 for a Siena defense that owned a 68-55 edge in digs on the day.
Rachelle Wilson and Sarah Weiner each had 10 kills for Iona. Libero Allison Nieters - the leading candidate for MAAC defensive Player of the Year - led all players with 24 digs.
Siena returns to action Sunday at Manhattan at 2 p.m.
