LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Ashleigh Barone and Maria DeMatteo each notched goals in a 2-1 win over Saint Peter's Friday afternoon in Jersey City, N.J. Siena has won four consecutive games and continues their run towards the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships.
Siena (12-1-2, 5-1) dominated the game, outshooting Saint Peter's 22-7, but allowed it to remain close.
The Saints got on the scoreboard first with freshman Ashleigh Barone's 13th goal of the season in the 15th minute. At the top of the box, Barone placed her shot in the right side of the net past goalkeeper Reanna Gibbs. Nine minutes later, sophomore Maria DeMatteo scored on a breakaway, putting the Saints up 2-0. DeMatteo has scored in six of 13 games played.
Saint Peter's (3-12, 0-6) cut the lead to one in the 62nd minute on a goal by Courtney Sundstrom from 10 yards out. The Peahens failed to record a shot in the final 28 minutes of the game.
Siena split time in goal for the first time this season as Laura Ettinger blanked Saint Peter's in the first half, making three saves and Elizabeth Barna made one stop on two shots in the second half. Gibbs recorded eight saves in the loss.
The Saints return to action Sunday against Manhattan in Riverdale, N.Y. at 10 a.m.
