Saints Defeat Rider 3-0; Earn Spot in MAAC Tournament

Oct. 31, 2008

Final Stats

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Freshman Ashleigh Barone scored two goals in a 3-0 victory over Rider in Loudonville Friday afternoon. With the win, Siena clinched one of the four spots in the 2008 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships to be held in Loudonville next weekend.

Siena (13-1-3, 6-1-1) controlled possession for much of the first half, but Rider (2-13-3, 1-6-1) played good team defense and kept most of the play up at midfield and on the perimeter. In the 15th minute, Rider had two quality scoring chances. First, a ball was played through the Saints' defense but goalkeeper Laura Ettinger came off her line to clear it away before Alison Brody could reach it. Less than a minute later, Kayla Devlin ripped a shot from 25 yards out, but once again Ettinger made the save, tipping the ball off the cross bar and collecting the rebound.

Barone got the Saints on the scoreboard at the 32:49 mark. Sophomore Cara Riley played a ball to the right corner of the penalty box where Barone ran onto it and touched it past the charging keeper.

Barone scored her second goal of the game and 15th of the season in the 81st minute. Sophomore Maria DeMatteo played a ball through the middle of the defense that sent Barone on the break. She tipped it past Post who was well out of her box, regained control and sent her shot in the empty net. DeMatteo created some more breathing room at the 85:28 mark, scoring her seventh goal of the season. Chelsea Maguire beat her defender down the right side and took it along the end line, played a crisp pass to DeMatteo who sent it in the back of the net for a 3-0 lead.

Ettinger earned her seventh shutout of the season with two saves. Post made five saves for Rider.

The Saints have clinched a berth in the MAAC Tournament for the fifth time in six years.

The Saints play the regular-season finale against Loyola in Loudonville on Sunday at 1 p.m. Seniors Patti Carroll, Stephanie DiMari, Chelsea Maguire and Shana Brady will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
