Final Stats
Burgandy McCurty's 26 kills and 13 digs helped Siena hold off Marist 3-2 in MAAC volleyball action Saturday in Poughkeepsie. Kelly Hummel contributed 18 kills and four blocks as the Saints lost a 2-0 lead, but won the decisive fifths et 15-12. The Saints, however, hit .474 in the deciding set to take the match 3-2 (25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 24-2, 15-12).
Siena (17-12, 14-3 MAAC) dominated the first set, jumping out to a quick 7-1 lead. The Saints then grew the lead to nine at 13-4 with consecutive kills by Kau'i Robello. Marist fought off two set points, but Siena took the first set 25-20.
Marist (14-16, 9-8 MAAC) and Siena traded points to start the second set, playing to a 10-10 tie. Sparked by a block by McCurty and Kelly Hummel, the Saints went on a 4-1 run to go ahead 14-11. Siena did not give up the lead from there, holding the Red Foxes to a .062 hitting percentage in taking the set 25-22.
The Red Foxes fought back to tie the match with wins in the third and the fourth set,
Alexandra Schultze had 25 kills to lead Marist, and is now second in school history with 1,164 career kills.
Joanna Foss added 20 kills and hit .326. Lindsey Schmid had 13 kills and hit a team-high .391. Libero Cassie Campbell led the team with 16 digs.
Siena took control of the fifth set early grabbing a 7-2 lead. Marist closed to within 7-5 on two Schultze kills and a Campbell service ace. The Red Foxes tied the set at 8-8 on a Schmid kill, but Kruglik answered back for Siena to give them a 9-8 lead. The Saints did not relinquish the lead, hitting .474 in the fifth set to win 15-12 and take the match 3-2.
Marist outhit the Saints .245-.224 in the match and held a slight 56-55 advantage in digs. Siena had the edge in blocks, 10.0-7.0. McCurty led all players with 26 kills and added 13 digs and seven blocks. Hummel had 18 kills, while Kruglik added 12.
The Saints will close the 2008 regular season on Sunday at home against Saint Peter's. First serve will be at 2:10 pm. Following a Senior Day ceremony.
