Final Stats
Burgandy McCurty was the only player for either team to post double figure kills, finishing with 22 to lead Siena past upstart Saint Peter's 3-0 in Loudonville on Senior Day Sunday. The Saints recognized their senior class of Emily Kruglik, Kathi Kobayashi, Kelly Hummel and April London in a prematch ceremony and all four players contributed greatly to the win.
Siena battled from behind to post a 25-23 win in the first set, took the second 25-27 and rallied for an epic 30-28 win in the third.
McCurty passed the 500-kill mark on the season, becoming just the second player in school history to do so. She needs just 12 kills to tie the school's single season record.
Kruglik had her second straight strong match and it looks as if she will play a key role in next week's Championships, manning the middle when McCurty rotates to the back row. On this day, Kruglik had eight kills in 16 attacks.
Hummel meanwhile had nine kills on the outside, posting a hitting percentage over .300 for the second time in as many games. London was her reliable self in the setting role, finishing with 42 assists, 10 digs and an ace. She is the school's all-time leader in the former and later categories.
Kobayashi returned to the rotation as the team's libero. She is second all-time in digs in program history and had five today.
Saint Peter's was led by Kate McFadden and Kim Mendoza who each had eight kills.
The Saints secured the #2 seed in next weekend's championships. They will play #3 seed Canisius in one of Sunday's semifinals which are slated for 1 and 4 p.m. on UHY Court at the Alumni Recreation Center in Loudonville. #1 seed Fairfield will take on #4 seed Iona in the other semifinal. The Championship match will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
