LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Dawn Evans scored 32 points to lead James Madison University past Siena 87-62 in a non-conference game Tuesday evening in Loudonville. The Dukes led throughout to win their fourth consecutive game in the first ever meeting with the Saints. Siena had four players score in double-figures with senior captain Heather Stec leading the way with 15 points.
James Madison (7-4) had a 10-4 lead in the first three minutes of the game until Siena's (2-9) Serena Moore and Cathy Cockrum cut the deficit to 12-10 at the 15:08 mark. Moore went 4-of-4 from the floor in the first six minutes of the game, but only managed four shots the rest of the way.
The Dukes finished the first half on a 20-9 run fueled by sophomore Dawn Evans and opened up a 51-31 lead at intermission. Evans, the nation's second leading scorer, scored 20 of her 32 points in the first half.
At the half, JMU had more offensive rebounds (16) than Siena had total rebounds (14). The Saints are 0-9 this season when outrebounded by the opponent.
JMU started the second half with a 9-0 run until Siena settled down. They played the Dukes even the rest of the way with balanced scoring. Heather Stec (15), Moore (12), Cristina Centeno (10) and Sarah Fullmer (10) all scored in double-figures.
Siena's bench contributed when given the chance, scoring 26 points.
The Saints also saw a positive with 19 assists. Junior guard Charlieann Chacon and freshman Brittany Wilwohl each had five assists and just one turnover.
Siena hurt their chances by only hitting 15-of-25 free throws (7-of-15 in the first half). JMU took advantage with 28 points off turnovers and 21 second chance points.
Siena returns to action Sunday when they travel to Saint Peter's. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
