LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Freshman Ashleigh Barone scored on a breakaway in the 90th minute to lift Siena over Army 3-2 Sunday afternoon in Albany. Siena won the Governor's Cup in a tie breaker over Sacred Heart by outscoring the Pioneers 5-3 in the tournament.
Siena (5-0-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when Barone passed to Stephanie DiMari who burst through the defense and hit a low shot that beat Army's Alex Lostetter.
Army (5-4) responded just two minutes later on a header from Sarah Goss off a corner kick from Lindsay Gordon to tie the game 1-1. The Black Knights scored again in the 22nd minute when Dymon Washington hit a lofted shot from the top of the box that went over Siena's goalkeeper Laura Ettinger and into the back of the net.
Army outshot the Saints 16-5 in the first half, but Ettinger was solid, recording seven saves in the half and 10 in the game. Lostetter made four saves in defeat.
Siena tied the game in the 64th minute on a corner kick from Lindsay Tegas to DiMari who headed it on to Barone for the goal. Barone put the Saints in front for good in the 90th minute on her second goal of the game. Sophomore Cara Riley passed it to Barone who broke away and scored the game winner.
Barone won the Offensive MVP of the tournament with her two goals and assist in today's win. Barone, Riley, Samantha Butzke, and Maren Serafine earned spots on the All-Tournament Team.
The Saints return to action Wednesday at Holy Cross at 7 p.m.
