Catherine Shomo and Bridget Carr each rank in the top-20 individually as the Siena women's golf team surged to a sixth place standing following the opening round of the Rutgers Invitational Friday in Piscataway, N.J. The Saints stand a mere 17 strokes off the lead in a packed 18-team field that features some of the nation's top teams.

St. John's (308) leads the field following the first 18-holes of the 36-hole event held at the par-72, 6,034 yard Rutgers University Golf Course. Boston College (312) is second, with the host Scarlet Knights (316) currently third.

The Saints (325) are just nine strokes out of the top-3 and sit just one place behind Hartford (321) which leads all MAAC competitors through the first round.

Shomo shot a +5 round of 77 Friday, placing her tied for 11th overall individually. Carr meanwhile shot a 38 on the back-nine and her +7 score (79) puts her in a tie for 15th overall.

Despite only being tied for eighth overall in the team competition, Fairleigh Dickinson's Michele Holzwarth leads all individuals following a round of 73.

Siena returns to action Sunday morning for an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start for the final 18-holes.
