LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena women's soccer dominated Canisius throughout, but Meagan Jones' goal was enough to beat the Saints 1-0 Sunday afternoon. Siena outshot Canisius 23-5, but struggled to put its attempts on goal. Goalkeeper Daniella Pettinari earned the shutout with five saves.
Siena (11-4, 5-3) controlled play from the opening whistle. The Saints registered five shots in the first 10 ½ minutes but couldn't put any of them on goal. Canisius (10-3-2, 3-3-1) took its first shot at the 15:35 mark. The Golden Griffins scored on their second shot, the only one they put on goal. In the 39th minute, Siena's defense tried to clear the ball out of its six yard box, but hit it low and straight up the middle. Jones intercepted the ball in the penalty area and shot it inside the right post.
The Saints came out of halftime recharged and dominated the first 25 minutes. Less than four minutes in, freshman Caitlin Cahalan was on a breakaway, but Pettinari came out, cut down the angle and made the save. Four minutes later, Cahalan sent in Barone with a header and Barone ripped her shot off the crossbar. In the 57th minute, there was a flurry of action in Canisius' box and junior Cara Riley took a shot. Pettinari made the save.
Sophomore Lindsay Tegas led all players with seven shots. Cahalan had five shots.
Canisius handed Siena its first loss of the season last year by a score of 1-0.
Siena returns to action this Saturday in its final regular season game. The Saints will host Marist at 1 p.m. Siena's senior class of Christina Macera and Marissa Shibley will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
