The Siena women's golf team won its ninth consecutive MAAC Championship Sunday afternoon at the Celebration Golf Club in Celebration, Fla. holding off challenger Fairfield by three strokes. Sophomore sensation Katelynn Mannix shot a 74 on the final day to capture the individual championship for a second straight year.

"I'm very pleased with how our team finished off the year," said head coach Dave Wronowski. "I give Fairfield a lot of credit, they played us strong. I give our team a lot of credit as well for sticking in there despite difficult conditions to win another championship."

The Saints and Stags shot identical team scores of 321 on the final 18 holes of the 54-hole event, allowing the Saints to maintain their modest three stroke leading heading into Sunday to win the championship.

Mannix saved her best for last, following up rounds of 80 and 78 with a final round score 74 on Sunday which was the best single round for any player for the tournament. Mannix, who won MAAC Rookie of the Year last season and is the reigning MAAC Golfer of the Month, captured her second consecutive Charles "Scott" McLeod Award as the individual champion.

A 1980 graduate of Iona College, McLeod passed away in 1985 following a life-long battle with kidney-related ailments. McLeod was a lifetime member of the Pelham Country Club where the MAAC Tournament was held during the 1980's and was a sponsor of the tournament the first year that it was held at Pelham.

Catherine Shomo shot a final round score of 77 to finish second overall, while senior captain Bridget Carr rounded out the top-five. Freshman Julie Juchno finished ninth overall and was named MAAC Rookie of the Year.

Additionally, three Saints were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team. Mannix headlined the group with a perfect 4.0 GPA as a biochemistry major. Teammates Shomo (Spanish - 3.69) and Carr (Management - 3.35) joined her on the list.

The Siena College women's golf team becomes the third Siena program to win the MAAC Tournament Championship during the 2008-09 academic year. Last fall, the Siena volleyball team won its fourth consecutive tournament title and earlier this year the men's basketball team captured its second straight conference championship.
