LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Freshman forward Caitlin Cahalan scored the game winning goal in the 81st minute and sophomore Ashleigh Barone iced the game four minutes later to give Siena a 3-1 win over Holy Cross at Siena Field Sunday afternoon. Cahalan had a goal and an assist in the game and leads the team with eight points this season.
Siena (3-1) outshot Holy Cross (3-2-1) 12-9 in the first half, but neither team could find the back of the net. Sophomore defender Shannon Clancy had some quality scoring chances on corner kicks early in the game. In the 13th minute she headed a corner at the near post and goalkeeper Mary Ferketic was forced to make a reaching save at the near post. Clancy finished with four shots.
Three minutes into the second half, Cahalan sent a cross from the left side into the penalty box and Susan Schneck shot it past Ferketic for a 1-0 lead. But the Crusaders came right back and tied the game a minute later. Shelby Stand hit a rocket from a few yards outside the penalty box and put it in the right side netting.
The Saints turned up the heat towards the end of the game and scored two goals in the final 10 minutes. Cahalan tallied the game winner in the 81st minute when junior midfielder Cara Riley played a ball through the heart of the Holy Cross defense. Cahalan ran onto it and fired it past Ferketic and into the goal. Cahalan led all players with six shots and tested the Crusaders defense throughout. Four minutes later, Barone won a loose ball in the box and was taken down by Ferketic. She converted the PK, putting it low and to the left.
Siena goalkeeper Liz Barna earned the win with six saves in her first start of the season. Ferketic made six saves in defeat.
Siena returns to action this Wednesday when it plays at cross-town rival UAlbany. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
