Final Stats
Siena began its quest for a fifth straight MAAC title with a decisive straight set (25-18, 25-21, 25-19) win over visiting Loyola (Md.) at UHY Court in the ARC Saturday. Burgandy McCurty led the way with 19 kills and a .417 attack percentage.
McCurty's kill broke a 7-7 tie in the first set and the Saints never trailed again in a 25-18 victory. The second set was also tied at 7-7 before Aubrey Bobo finished a kill, and Siena never trailed again in a 25-21 win. The Saints broke free from a 5-5 tie in the final set with another McCurty kill and never looked back to close out the match with a 25-19 triumph.
Bobo had 10 of her 12 kills in the final two sets, improving her swing as the match went on. She posted a .407 attack percentage and rounded out a strong double-double with a match-high 16 digs.
The Saints again utilized both their freshmen setters, and both were effective. Starter Sarah Sivertson ended with 25 assists and two aces and Elizabeth Ives finished off the match with 14 assists and two digs in the third set.
Libero Lesli Akeo joined Bobo with double figure digs, posting 12 to help anchor Siena's back row defense.
Loyola was led by Nina Camaioni with 13 kills and nine digs. Janet Pressler killed five of her 10 attacks and added 12 digs, and setter Aubrey Kirven collected 32 assists. The Geryhounds out-blocked the Saints 7-5.
The Saints improved their attack in each set, posting a .250 percentage in the first, a .289 in the second and a .355 percentage in the third.
Siena will look to make it a weekend MAAC sweep when they take on Rider Sunday at 2 p.m. here in Loudonville.
