LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Sophomore midfielder Lindsay Tegas volleyed a cross from Jill Roth into the right side netting in the 63rd minute and Siena went on to defeat Saint Peter's 2-0 in the MAAC opener for both teams Friday afternoon. The win marks Siena's seventh in a row after opening the season with a loss to Central Connecticut State. Tegas also assisted on Caitlin Cahalan's insurance goal in the 76th minute.
Siena (7-1, 1-0) controlled play throughout and outshot Saint Peter's (2-7-1, 0-1) 18-8 in the game. Both teams had a great scoring chance in the first half but couldn't connect. Siena's came in the 14th minute off a corner kick. Tegas sent in the cross and it bounced to sophomore Shannon Clancy who ripped a shot off the crossbar and out of play. Saint Peter's almost got on the scoreboard four minutes later. Samantha Lockhart took a free kick from 30 yards out and hit a rocket on goal. Goalkeeper Liz Barna timed her jump perfectly and tipped the shot over the crossbar.
Tegas was robbed four minutes into the second half. Cahalan beat goalkeeper Caitlin Hoffer to the ball at the right side of the box and sent a chip shot towards the vacated goal. The ball made it through everyone until Tegas shot it and clanked it off the far post. She found the net in the 76th minute when she finished a cross sent in by Roth. Cahalan made it 2-0 at the 75:55 mark. Tegas passed her the ball down the left side and Cahalan ran on to it and shot it inside the far post.
Barna made three saves in her first shutout of the season and second of her career. Hoffer made five saves in the loss.
Junior midfielder Tabitha Tice played 38 minutes and registered two shots in her first game back since September 6.
Siena returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Manhattan. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
