LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena won its third straight game and the fourth in its last five with a 64-57 victory over Canisius in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game Tuesday evening. Canisius' Brittane Russell scored a career-high 27 points and brought the Golden Griffins within one point with five minutes left, but senior guard Allie Lindemann drilled a 3-pointer on the next possession, silencing the potential comeback.
Lindemann led the team with 19 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor and 4-of-5 from 3. Sarah Fullmer added 18 points and Serena Moore posted her second consecutive double-double (11 points, 12 rebounds).
Siena's (4-7, 2-0) defense paved the way once again, forcing 18 turnovers and holding the opponent under 40% from the field for the third straight game.
The Saints started slow with three turnovers on their first four possessions and Canisius (5-8, 0-2) led the first five minutes of the game. Siena went on an 8-2 run over a four minute span that put them up 15-12 with 12 minutes left in the first half.
Siena buckled down at the end of the first half, keeping Canisius from scoring for the final five minutes. The Saints led 26-24 at intermission.
The Saints extended their lead early in the first half, going to Fullmer and Moore inside and Lindemann popping 3's from the perimeter. Fullmer (7), Lindemann (5) and Moore (4) scored Siena's first 16 points of the second half and pushed their lead to 42-29 at the 13:58 mark.
But Russell kept her team in the game with 19 second half points. She hit a 3-pointer on the break to bring her team within one point (50-49) and five minutes to play. After a Siena timeout, Lindemann responded on the ensuing possession by nailing a 3-pointer. The bucket pushed the lead back to four points and propelled Siena for an 8-0 run.
Siena Head Coach Gina Castelli relied on her starters again, with all five logging more than 30 minutes. Cathy Cockrum scored five points and grabbed two rebounds off the bench.
The Saints return to action on Friday when they play Saint Peter's in Jersey City, New Jersey. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
