LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena volleyball just knows how to win in November. Entering the month with just a 4-10 league mark, the Saints won their final three matches in impressive style, culminating with a straight sets smackdown of Marist (25-20, 25-15, 25-13) this afternoon at the ARC on Senior Day. Siena will be the No. 8 seed in next week's MAAC Tournament and open up against ninth seeded Saint Peter's.
Siena (9-19, 8-10) raced out to a 17-7 lead in the first set and withstood a late Marist (13-17, 8-10) rally to win the game. The Red Foxes took a 3-2 lead in the second set, but it would be their last lead of the match save for winning the first point of the third set as the Saints completed dominated in posting double-digit wins in the final two sets.
The Saints controlled all facets off the match, recording 41 kills to the Red Foxes' 24. Siena completed a whopping 33.7% of its attacks while Marist converted just 8.1%. Additionally, the Saints tallied 37 assists to just 20 for Marist and recorded a 36-18 advantage in digs.
In a well-balanced team effort, Taylor Akana and senior captain Brianne Bobo led the way with nine kills apiece while fellow senior Brittany Lintelman finished 53.8% of her attacks resulting in eight kills. Bobo set the pace for the match early, recording three straight aces to begin the opening set. Akana meanwhile added a match-high 17 digs.
Senior Blair Atkins was equally impressive in her final home match, killing all six of her attacks. Lindsey Schmid led Marist with a match-high 11 kills.
The Saints now travel to Lake Buena Vista, Fla. to meet the Peahens in the Opening Round of the double-elimination MAAC Tournament Thursday morning at ESPN's Wide World of Sports Complex. The Saints, which swept Saint Peter's in straight sets in both matches this season, battle the Peahens at 11 a.m.
