Final Stats
The Siena volleyball team faced a classic trap match Sunday, playing an experienced Canisius squad on Senior Day a day after its biggest league win in years. The result was a 3-0 (26-24, 25-22 and 25-18) setback that ended the Saints' seven-match MAAC win streak, and placed critical importance on the final two matches of the regular-season at home next weekend.
Siena built a 19-14 first-set lead before the Griffs used a 7-2 run, capped by a kill from Samantha Good, to even the score at 21-21. With the set locked at 24-24, Canisius won the final two points to steal the set.
Canisius used a 9-2 run midway through the second set to build an 18-11 lead, and then held on for dear life. The Griffs led 24-16, but wouldn't win the set until the seventh set point, as Siena battled back by winning six straight points. A kill from Danielle Brawn gave Canisius the 2-0 lead in the match.
The Griffs trailed 11-9 in the third set before a 6-0 run behind the serve of Allyson Severyn gave them control of the set and the match. Canisius never let Siena get closer than three points the rest of the way, using two solo blocks from Roxanne Hernandez to close out the match.
Colleen Ahearn and Taylor Akana led Siena (11-14, 9-7 MAAC) with eight kills apiece. Elizabeth Ives had seven blocks while Sarah Sivertson had 26 assists and Lesli Akeo had 17 digs.
Siena concludes its regular season with two home matches next weekend, hosting Saint Peter's on Saturday and Manhattan in what could be a do-or-die match for a MAAC Tournament bid Sunday.
