Final Stats
Alicja Pawelec led the way with 14 kills and 10 digs as the Iona volleyball team coasted to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-18 and 25-19) victory over Siena in Loudonville Saturday afternoon. Taylor Akana had 13 kills to pace the Saints.
Iona raced to a 17-8 lead in the first set, taking command of the match. Pawelec had six of her 14 kills in the first set to help set the tone. The Gaels led 8-2 in the second set, and although Siena rallied mildly to make it 18-15, the outcome was never in doubt. The most competitive set came after intermission. The Saints took a quick 8-3 lead, but Iona broke free from a 17-17 tie, scoring five straight points behind the service of Catrina Warren to complete the sweep.
Warren was a force in the middle as well, collecting seven kills without an attack error. Madisyn Spence had nine kills on the outside when Pawelec rotated back.
Siena was its own worst enemy, committing 17 attack errors and seven service errors. By contrast, the Gaels had just eight hitting errors and three serving errors. The Saints did hit well, especially on the outside, where freshman Rachel Stoklosa stepped up with nine kills. Colleen Ahearn added five kills in the middle on just 11 attacks.
It's a quick turn for the Saints. They face archrival Fairfield here at the ARC on Sunday at 2 p.m.
