Siena women's soccer broke a one-all tie with two clutch goals in the final 15 minutes to pull out a 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon over Temple in Ambler, Pa. Senior midfielder Lindsay Tegas scored twice, while classmate Ashleigh Barone added the game-winning goal.
Tegas found the perfect time to record her first points of the season. She gave the Saints (5-2) an early 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when she headed in a feed from Caitlin Cahalan.
But Temple (3-6) came out firing in the second half and notched the equalizer in the 54th minute. Casey Greco's corner found the head of Kate Yurkovic to tie things at 1-1.
Siena responded in the 76th when the clutch Barone struck again, adding to her program record with her 15th career game-winning goal and third of the season. Cahalan picked up another helper on the play, capping a six-point week for the junior.
Tegas made sure the advantage held up as she added an insurance tally in the 86th, finishing a pass from sophomore back Sara Mikula who was making her first career start. Tegas, who recorded the first multi-goal game of her career, moved into eighth place on the program's all-time career scoring list, just two points behind Cahalan.
Siena out-shot Temple 16-14, while the Owls held a 6-4 edge in corners. Laura Ettinger made four saves to earn the victory in goal for the Saints, while Tara Murphy made six stops for Temple which fell to 1-3 on the season against the MAAC.
The defending conference champion Saints return to action when they open their title defense Friday night at Fairfield in a 7 p.m. kickoff.
