Emily Elek had 20 kills and 15 digs to help Canisius rally past Siena 3-1 in Loudonville Sunday. The Griffs victory offset an epic match for senior libero Lesli Akeo, who collected a career-best 37 digs in the four sets for Siena.
The Saints (6-7, 1-1) rode the momentum of their four-set win over Niagara Saturday to an easy 25-17 win in the first set, but then Canisius (5-7, 2-0) settled in. The Griffs scored the final eight points of the second set, breaking free from a 17-17 tie to tie the match.
After intermission, the two teams played two very close sets, but Canisius came out on top in both. The Griffs led just 23-21 in the third set, when they took advantage of one of 11 Siena service errors to get to set point, and then won the set on Emily Litwin's ace.
The decisive fourth set was a thriller. The Saints trailed 20-15, but rallied to tie it at 21-21. The set was tied 23-23 when Samantha Good took over, killing the final two points from her middle hitter post.
In addition to Akeo's stellar performance, junior Taylor Akana returned to form on the outside. Akana killed a match-high 24 of her 36 attacks, and added 10 digs for her sixth double-double of the season.
The 11 service errors were a huge factor for Siena. The Saints led in kills (58-54) and digs (81-67).
Canisius held an 11-7 edge in blocks, and got 26 digs from libero Allyson Severyn.
Siena setter Sarah Sivertson played another strong match. Sivertson finished with 47 assists and 13 digs.
The Saints try to get back in the win column Wednesday when they host archrival Fairfield at 7 p.m.
