LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - It may be early, but Siena Women's Basketball is off to the program's best start in 14 years and they could not have looked much more impressive in accomplishing it. Senior captain Tehresa Coles led three Saints in double figures as Siena blasted Central Connecticut 79-57 in the home opener at the ARC.
Siena's (2-0) starting five dominated, outscoring Central Connecticut's (1-2) starters 71-30 while shooting 59.5% from the field. Overall, the Saints shot 53.1% for the night, the program's highest percentage since shooting at a 58.1% clip in an 81-59 win over Niagara on Jan. 11, 2009.
Coles led the way, shooting 9-13 from the field including a perfect 3-3 from three-point range. Classmate Ida Krogh also knocked down all three of her triple tries in adding 17 points on 5-6 shooting to go along with five assists.
Siena went on an early 12-2 run to take a 12-point lead, 26-14 at the 9:38 mark. The Blue Devils never got closer than seven points the rest of the way as Siena opened a 41-32 lead at the break and led by double figures for the final 18 minutes in a thorough team win.
Sophomore captain Meghan Donohue added 13 points for the Saints which led by as much as 27. Freshman starters Margot Hetzke and Kollyns Scarbrough were equally solid, adding nine points apiece. Hetzke contributed 10 rebounds in just missing out on a potential second straight double-double to begin her collegiate career.
Nicole Ferguson scored a team-high 12 points on four threes off the bench for Central Connecticut, while Amanda Harrington added 10 points for the Blue Devils which shot just 22.2% (8-36) in the second half.
For the second straight game, Siena dominated inside posting an identical 34-16 edge in points in the paint. The win marked just the Saints' second in their last 10 home openers and first home-opening win at the ARC since 2004.
Off to their first 2-0 start since winning the program's lone MAAC Championship during the 2000-01 season, the Saints will have nine days to savor their victory. Siena returns to action the day after Thanksgiving for the University of Denver Thanksgiving Classic. The Saints open against the host Pioneers on Nov. 28 at 4:30 p.m. ET.
