The Siena Women's Golf team fought off unfavorable playing conditions to finish round one of the Dartmouth Invitational in fifth place.
Mary Fletcher and
Katie Nelson led the way for the Saints, who have four golfers currently in the top 40.
In a day that saw both a late start and a rain delay, Siena was able to finish the first round in the top half of the 13-team invitational. All four Siena golfers finished within six strokes of each other, with Fletcher and Nelson leading the pack.
The Saints are only four strokes behind fourth place Brown University, and only seven strokes out of the number two spot. Boston University leads the field after the first round, placing all five of their golfers in the top ten.
Siena leads all other MAAC competitors as Fairfield, Hartford and Quinnipiac finished the day ninth, 11th and 12th, respectively. Fletcher and Nelson finished the round tied for second among MAAC individuals, only one stroke behind Fairfield's Michelle Applegate.
Last year the Saints finished fourth at the Invitational, with Victoria Nguyen leading the team, finishing tied for 15th. The Saints will get an earlier start tomorrow morning as tee times for the second round are set to begin at 8 am.
