Cornell Match Final Stats
UNLV Match Final Stats

The Siena volleyball seemed to have control of its match with Cornell Saturday morning in the Seton Hall Invitational after winning the second and third sets by a combined 21 points. But the Big Red fought back to win two ultra-tight sets and claim a five-set win (25-22, 16-25, 13-25, 25-23 and 15-13). The Saints later fell to UNLV in three sets (25-11, 25-17 and 25-23) in their final match of the Tournament.

Cornell 3, Siena 2

Emily Wemhoff had two of her 14 kills at the most opportune time, accounting for the final two Cornell points in a decisive 15-13 fifth set victory that completed an improbable comeback.

After dropping the first set 25-22 despite a late rally, Siena broke free from a 13-13 tie with a 9-0 run behind Rachel Stoklosa's serve on its way to a 25-16 win in the second. The Saints rode the momentum, and Stoklosa's hot serve, to a dominant 25-13 victory after intermission to take a 2-1 lead.

Cornell jumped to an 18-13 lead in the third set, but Siena battled back to close within 24-23, leading to a timeout. Maddy Sroufe's kill off an Alyssa Phelps feed forced the fifth set.

The decisive set was tied 10-10 when Cornell scored three straight points to take control. The Saints closed within 13-12 on a Braina Flagg kill and a Stoklosa ace, but got no closer.

Siena setter Haley Howell had a phenomenal match, posting 42 assists, 10 digs, three blocks and five kills in seven dumps without an error. Stoklosa led the Saints with 13 kills. Shantraie Rodriguez played the top match of her young career with 10 kills in 20 attempts with just one error.

UNLV 3, Siena 0

The Rebels scored the first six points on their way to a dominant 25-11 win in the first set, but Siena showed great improvement in each of the final two sets in a representative 3-0 loss.

Meghann Wright led Siena (1-6) with eight kills and Flagg posted 11 digs. Regular libero Bobbi Lin Kalama registered 10 assists in the third set, getting some spot experience as the Saints' setter. She also added eight digs on the match.

Alyssa Wing led all players with 15 kills and Allison Davies had 24 assists for UNLV (5-2). Katlin Winters had six blocks and six kills without an error in the middle.

Siena will try to end its six-match losing streak Tuesday night when it opens its home season against Binghamton at 7 p.m.
