Saints Fall to St. Bonaventure in Season Opener

Nov. 13, 2015

Final Stats

OLEAN, N.Y. -- Miranda Drummond led all scorers with 15 points as St. Bonaventure defeated Siena Women's Basketball 57-40 in the season opener for both squads in the First Round of the Preseason WNIT at the Reilly Center.

St. Bonaventure advances to the Second Round of the Preseason WNIT Sunday where the Bonnies will face the winner of No. 22/RV DePaul and Southern Illinois which tipped off later Friday night. Siena drops into the consolation bracket and will play its final two games of the Preseason WNIT at a yet-to-be determined host school next weekend.

Sophomore guard Kollyns Scarbrough scored a team-high 10 points for Siena, which struggled from the field in shooting just 26.5% (13-49) while missing 15 of their 16 three-point attempts.

The Saints did however get off to a quick start thanks to their swarming pressure defense. As a result, Siena opened as large as a six-point lead late in the first quarter and ultimately took a 17-13 lead at the end of the first 10-minute segment. For the game, Siena scored nearly half of its points (19 of 40) off 19 St. Bonaventure turnovers.

But Siena scored only four second quarter points, shooting just 2-14 from the field as the Bonnies rallied to take a 26-21 lead at the half. St. Bonaventure carried its momentum into the second half, scoring the first six points of the third quarter to increase their run to 22-4 and build a 12-point advantage.

The Saints found a spark at the end of the third quarter scoring the final seven points to halve the deficit, but the Bonnies responded with the first seven points of the final quarter to push their lead back to 14 and pull away.

Junior captain Meghan Donohue contributed eight points for Siena which shot just 7-35 (20%) in scoring only 23 points over the final three quarters spanning 30 minutes. Freshman Deja Rawls contributed six points and a team-high three assists in starting at the point in her collegiate debut.

Preseason First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection Katie Healy recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds for St. Bonaventure which held a 42-28 advantage on the glass.

Before returning to Preseason WNIT action next weekend, the Saints will host Northeastern for their home opener in the new-look ARC Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. for Siena's Annual "Stomp Out Homelessness" Game which looks to raise money and awareness for Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless.
