Hofstra held off Siena 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 27-25 and 25-20) Tuesday afternoon in Hempstead in a match between the defending CAA and MAAC champions. Junior Briana Flagg and freshman Annie Stock tied for a match-high with 17 kills in the setback for Siena.
Hofstra (4-1) went 28-6 last season and won the CAA. Junior outside Veronika Kostova led the Pride with 15 kills, and 2014 CAA Setter of the Year Hannah Klemm had 56 assists.
Siena (1-4) got 23 digs from libero Kalehua Katagiri and 18 from junior Bobbi Lin Kalama. Setter Haley Howell finished with 41 assists and 16 digs, and the Saints out-blocked the Pride 10-4.
Hofstra led the first set 22-14 before Siena rallied to within 24-21 behind the serving of Kalama. Kalama started the second set with three straight aces helping the Saints build a 7-1 lead they would not relinquish. Hofstra closed to 21-19 following an attack error, but Siena found its footing after a timeout and Stock finished things off with a sharp kill to even the match.
The third set proved critical and each team had its chances. Hofstra led 23-21 before Stock finished two attacks to tie the score. Flagg's kill tied the set again at 25-25, but a serving error and an attack error gave Hofstra the advantage. The Pride led 22-12 in the decisive fourth set, but Siena didn't go away. The Saints scored eight of the next 10 points to get within 24-20 before Kostova ended the match with a kill.
Siena returns to action Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against Hartford.
