Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker to Rider

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena Volleyball dropped a heart-breaking five sets to Rider 3-2 (23-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-14, 16-14). Since 2010, the Saints are now 11-2 over the Broncs.

It was a close first set as the conference foes battled for the advantage. After Rider took a 12-8 lead it was all about the Saints. Behind the serving of Haley Howell, Siena went on a 8-0 run to take a 16-12 lead. The Saints continued to hold an advantage and took the first set 25-23.

The Broncs started the second set with a 9-4 lead. Siena would not quit and tied the set 11-11. It was back-and-forth action between the two foes . After the Broncs came back and tied the set 17-17, Siena took control. It was a hard fought battle, but the Saints held on and took the second set 25-23.

Rider started off the third set with the lead. The Broncs continued to hold the advantage for the set as they led 19-15. Siena would continue to chip away at the lead and trailed just 24-21. Siena would get two more points before falling 25-23 in the third set.

As with the other sets, Rider started off strong. The Broncs continued to hold the advantage over Siena while taking a 17-9 lead. Siena fought hard but Rider went on a 4-0 run to take a 24-14 lead. The Broncs took the fourth set 25-14 to force a fifth set.

After exchanging points back and forth to start the fifth set, Rider took a 2-5 lead. The Broncs continued to hold onto the lead, but Siena would not give them the match that easy. Again behind the serving of Howell, the Saints tied it up 14-14. The Broncs were able to get the next two points to take the match.

Briana Flagg led the match with 22 kills, just one kill shy of tying her career-high. Flagg also recorded 11 digs. Howell recorded a double-double with 24 assists and 13 digs, while also tallying 3 service aces. Bobbi Lin Kalama dished out 19 assists for the Saints. Kalehua Katagiri recorded a team-high 20 digs, while Annie Stock added 10.

The Saints head back on the road to face Fairfield on Oct. 15. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
