LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- MAAC preseason favorite Fairfield erupted for 28 third quarter points to defeat Siena Women's Basketball 71-51 at the ARC. The game marked the Saints' 16th Annual Pink Zone Game presented by Berkshire Bank, which seeks to raise money and awareness for local breast cancer survivors.
Junior captain Meghan Donohue scored a season-high 16 points, shooting 7-11 from the field for Siena (12-15, 9-8) which has lost five straight and eight of 10.
Kristin Schatzlein led all scorers with a career-high 26 points on 9-13 shooting including 5-7 from three and five steals for red-hot Fairfield (16-10, 10-6) which has won eight straight and 10 of 11. Schatzlein totaled 48 points in the Stags' season sweep of the Saints, shooting 74% (17-23) from the field and 67% (8-12) from distance.
Siena got off to a strong start on the defensive end, forcing the MAAC's best ball handling team into 10 turnovers in leading for all but two minutes in the first half. But the Saints couldn't capitalize on the offensive end and a late 8-0 run propelled Fairfield to a 26-24 lead at the break.
The Stags carried that momentum over to the second half, shooting 63% from the field including 5-6 from three in the third quarter. Fairfield dished out nine assists on 10 made field goals in the quarter and scored the final 10 points of the frame to turn an eight-point lead into a commanding 18-point advantage. Schatzlein scored 11 of her points in the quarter, shooting a perfect 4-4 from the field and 3-3 from distance.
Symone Kelly added eight points and eight rebounds for Siena, and Emmanuella Edoka contributed five points, six rebounds and two blocks off the bench.
Samantha Cooper recorded 14 points, 12 rebounds and six assists and Casey Smith added 16 points for Fairfield which has captured 10 of the past 12 meetings between the programs and nine of the last 10 in the Capital Region.
The road ahead gets no easier for the Saints who head to MAAC frontrunner Iona Friday for a 7 p.m. tip-off on ESPN3.
