Fairfield, CT - After totaling just 32 points over the first three quarters, Siena women's basketball erupted for 25 points in the final stanza to cut what was as much as a 14-point deficit to two, but ultimately fell 61-57 at Fairfield. The Stags shot 45.1-percent from the floor for their fourth best shooting performance of the season.
Samantha Cooper recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Kelsey Carey and Casey Smith put up 16 and 10 points, respectively. The Stags (6-8, 3-2 MAAC) shot 45.1-percent from the floor for the game and put up two 50-percent efforts in the second and third quarter.
Siena (3-11, 2-3 MAAC) was led offensively by Jackie Benitez who put up 19 points, 13 of which came in the fourth quarter. Meghan Donohue had another double-digit outing and tallied 10 points for Siena while grabbing a team-high 6 boards.
The Stags started off hot and went up by as much as nine in the first quarter. After holding Siena to just eight points, Fairfield would lead 14-8 early in the conference matchup. Fairfield continued to get hot on the floor and shot 50-percent from the floor in the second quarter which helped extend their lead 32-21 at the half.
The Saints would bring it within seven, 37-30, but repeating their same effort for another 50-percent shooting as a team the Stags went up 43-32 to end the third quarter.
Two steals and nine points put the Saints down just two, 43-41 early in the fourth quarter. While the Stags would fight back and continue to hold the lead down the stretch, the Saints saw glimpses of a win. In the final minute of play, 18 points were scored between the two teams. Even with a season-high 25 points in the fourth quarter, Siena was unable to slow down the Stags and fell 61-57 on the road.
Siena returns back to Loundonville, New York to host Rider on Sunday, Jan. 8 where there will be a pregame ceremony for Meghan Donohue joining the 1,000 Point Club. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
