Rider Narrowly Defeats Siena in 160-134 Thriller

LOUDONVILLE, NY-- Siena Swimming and Diving fell in a close meet to Rider Saturday afternoon 160-134. Saints took home seven first place finishes out of 15 events.

In the 1000 yard freestyle Siena (0-1) junior Emma Rupert swam away with a first place finish with a time of 11:01.65 followed by freshman Sydney Lautenslager in second place with a time of 11:12.14.

Sophomore Carrie Bonvissuto narrowly defeated fellow sophomore teammate Katelyn Ludwicki in the 200 yard freestyle to take first and second with times of 2:01.95 and 2:03.03.

Saints come up with a narrow defeat against one another again in the 200 yard butterfly when junior Julianna Sebastian took home first with a time of 2:15.97 followed by teammate and junior co-captain Elizabeth Fournier in second with a time of 2:17.48.

In the 1 meter diving event, Rider's Breanne Hatter broke the pool record with a score of 285.60. The record was previously held by Siena Alum (`15) Hailey Beers with a score of 272.00.

In the 200 yard breaststroke, senior Erica Askew took first with a time of 2:31.35 followed by a third place finish by freshman Kylie George (2:32.36).

Siena took places one, two, and three in the 500 yard freestyle. Bonvissuto came in first (5:25.35), followed by Rupert in second (5:28.36), and freshman Lautenslager took third (5:29.88). Followed by a first place finish in the 100 yard butterfly by Fournier with a time of 1:01.72.

The 400 yard freestyle relay finished today's meet. The energy in the room went electric as both schools were neck and neck in the last leg of the race. Rachel Brown kept the crowd on their feet as she and Rider's Taylor Stalnaker were mere inches apart from tapping the wall. Brown would come up victorious for the Saints taking first place along with Ludwicki (27.92), junior Francesca Tinucci (26.29), Sophomore Alyssa Lewis (26.72), and Brown rounding off the relay team (26.15).

Saints won the swim portion of the meet but lost in the overall to Rider 160-134.

Siena will travel to Worcester, Massachusetts Wednesday October 18, 2017 to take on Holy Cross at 7 p.m.
